DNA Project

The Park/e/s DNA Surname Project

The availability of DNA testing for genealogical purposes has enabled many to overcome ‘brick walls’ in their family research, and Parke Society members have benefited greatly from this relatively new genealogical tool.

By testing the Y-chromosome of males bearing the Park/e/s surname and comparing the results with others in our database, we can determine whether participants share a common male Park/e/s ancestor. With numerous well-researched lines represented in our database, each new project member is likely to find a genetic connection to others who may have valuable lineage information to exchange. In the case of members who can only trace their Park/e/s ancestry back several generations, combining test results with the resources available to the Parke Society makes it possible to eliminate lineages which do not connect genetically, and to search the genetically linked lineages for likely candidates for the father of one’s earliest known male Park/e/s ancestor.

Important Note:

While there are several companies offering the Y-chromosome test for genealogical purposes, the Park/e/s DNA Surname Project uses Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) as its testing firm. It is strongly recommended that anyone interested in using DNA testing for their Park/e/s ancestry order their test from FTDNA (see link below) to ensure automatic inclusion into the Park/e/s DNA Surname Project. All DNA testing firms test slightly different sets of markers on the Y-chromosome, making a complete comparison between test results from different companies extremely difficult. If you have already tested with another company, please contact the Park/e/s DNA Surname Project group administrator about ordering a conversion kit to enable your inclusion in our project.

Lineage Information of Park/e/s DNA Participants

Below is a list of the known ancestry of each test participant. Tests are listed in the same order in which they appear in the ‘Y Results’ table on the Park/e/s DNA project website hosted by FTDNA: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/park-e-s/default.aspx?section=ycolorized Matching test results have been grouped together and color-coded for easier comparison on the ‘Y Results’ page. Tests are first grouped by Haplogroup, then by the subgroups within that Haplogroup using the Parke Society Lineage Key designation, when known. The Parke Society (PS) assigns a Lineage Key (LK) to each lineage within its membership. These are designated by using LK=__ and I have used those LK designations for each participant and/or group, when known.

Note: Tests 68823-70733-71217-73308-312605 may help prove the genetic connection of various early Pennsylvania lines. All are believed to descend from William PARK (01A1) (b. Co. Donegal Ire.-d. Ire.). In addition, there are two other tests which, if upgraded, may show a genetic connection to others in this group. One (67245) has roots in York Co. Penn. while the other (70762) has origins in Scotland, then to the Salt Lake City, Utah area in the USA with no Pennsylvania connections, thus indicating a more distant common ancestor. Recommendation for all tests in this group would be to upgrade to at least the 37 marker level, while 67 or 111 markers would give more information.

Earliest known ancestor is William PARK (b. 27 Sep 1805 N.C. or S.C.-d. 16 Dec 1864 place uncertain but family was living in Jasper Co. Ga.) There are two William Parks in the Confederate army from Georgia who died in Dec 1864, one in Richmond, Virginia and one in a POW camp in Illinois. Cannot confirm or deny if there is a connection. William would have been 59 years old and the second guy was in the guard, which would have been more reasonable. He had four sons in the war, all but Quedalous Smith PARK, who was a child. William married Almira Catherine KENDRICK, whose mother was Elizabeth PARKS, daughter of John & Katherine (HARRISON) PARKS (LK=OX). The earliest paper trail found is 1840 census in Pike Co. Ga. and a church history same year, same place.

HAPLOGROUP Q-M3

About My Haplogroup: This haplogroup is the only lineage strictly associated with native American populations. This haplogroup is defined by the presence of the M3 mutation. This mutation occurred on the Q lineage 8-12 thousand years ago as the migration into the Americas was underway. There is some debate as to on which side of the Bering Strait this mutation occurred, but it definitely happened in the ancestors of the Native American peoples.

THOMAS (VA 1728) LINE The Parke Society (PS) uses a system of Lineage Keys, and a further system of identifying each individual in a lineage by their generation from earliest ancestor as well as the individual’s number on the Society’s family group sheets (FGS). For example, Thomas PARKS (VA 1728), the earliest known ancestor in the LK=C line, is identified as [01C1] below. The 01 identifies him as the first generation, ‘C’ denotes the Lineage Key, and the 1 following the ‘C’ identifies his place on the FGS. Thomas’s son John is identified as [02C1]—again, 02 refers to the second generation, ‘C’ the Lineage Key, and 1 is his place on the particular FGS on which he appears. These are the identifying numbers for Thomas and his sons. Daughters also have these identifying numbers, but the Y-DNA project can only trace the direct male descendants.

This group includes several participants with paper trail connections to Thomas PARKS [01C1]. Thomas PARKS [01C1] was born ca. 1670 and died ca. 1761 in Albemarle Co. Va.. Others in the group below show a genetic connection, but have not yet found the connecting generations to a known Thomas [01C1] male descendant.

This suggests that perhaps 118711 shares a line of descent from Thomas>John>Thomas, though further research would be needed to confirm this.

This line may represent a distinct branch of the Thomas LK=C line, or may descend from an unknown collateral line, or may represent a Parks line completely unrelated to the LK=C line. Only an upgraded test could answer those questions.

GROUP 029: R-M269 LK=C-SUBGROUP

The four test participants in this group trace their ancestry to Thomas PARKS (VA 1728) LK=C; however, a DNA comparison with the LK=C haplotype does not indicate a genetic connection to the LK=C group. Based on the tests we have in the database at this time, it would seem the genetic disconnect may have occurred in one of the two generations in italics below. To narrow the point of the genetic disconnect to the exact generation, we would need a test participant who descends from Samuel PARKS (04C1), the only other known son of John PARKS (03C1).

Earliest known ancestor is Joseph PARKS (b. 1727 Co. Antrim Ire.) who settled in Cumberland Co., Penn. abt. 1760. The Joseph PARKS family relocated to the Scots-Irish community in Augusta Co. Va. during the Revolutionary War and returned to Cumberland Co. Penn. about 1786. The oldest sons, James (b. 1761) and Thomas (b. 1763-d. 1796 Huntingdon Co. Penn.) settled in Huntingdon Co., Penn. at that time (ca. 1786). Joseph had two sons who may have settled in Virginia – Joseph II (b. 1768) and John C. (b. 1772). Joseph II and John C. are both old enough to have been the father of James PARKS (b. ca. 1791 Va.), earliest known ancestor of LK=GO (see test 126932).

Joseph’s wife, Rebecca CLARK, died in 1794 and Joseph died 1810 – both are buried at Tinkling Spring Cemetery, Fishersville, Va. They apparently did not stay long in Pennsylvania and returned to Virginia. Their youngest son, David (b.17 Jul 1779) is buried at Green Spring Presbyterian Cemetery, Washington, Virginia.
